APELL - Volume 12 Issue 1

Opening Remarks

By David Adcock

The winter is officially over and its now time to start opening cottages for the season.  A number of us have broken pipes and other repairs to undertake before we can sit and relax.  It has been a challenging year for the executive as there was considerably more work involved with the association than was previously anticipated.  After so many years of living overseas, however, it was a delight for Gisèle and I to have the advantage of being able to use our cottage all of last summer rather than for just a couple of weeks.

Special thanks go to all those volunteers, both members and non-members, who provided so much assistance with the lake cleanup, the subsequent log disposal and the organization of the annual picnic.  Please keep up the good work!

In other news I must apologize for the lack of a fall newsletter; family health concerns have taken priority over volunteer activities.  Several members have written articles for the newsletter which are now somewhat outdated.  Given the interest shown by the authors the articles have been included for your perusal and I would encourage members to forward other items of interest for the next issue.  Also, and as discussed at the last executive meeting, sponsors of the newsletter will receive a complimentary mention in the next issue.

Elections for a new executive committee will be held at the August 30 general meeting and voting proxies and nomination forms have been attached.

I wish you all a nice and relaxing summer and hope to see you on May 31.

Time: 7:00pm at Dave and Gisèle's house.  Spouses are welcome and dinner will be served.

May 31st, 2003 - Annual General Meeting
10:30 am at the Salle des Loisirs.

June 07th, 2003 - Annual Lake Clean Up
Please meet at 09:00 am at the public access.
Each spring there are many floating and partially submerged logs that pose a hazard to all who use and enjoy our lake.  This is the reason we try to organize a lake clean up day each year.  Last year we had a very good turnout, both for the cleanup and for the log disposal.  This year we would ask everyone who can, to lend a hand.  Please remember "Many Hands Make Light Work".  Marc Girard is organizing the clean up and would appreciate your assistance.  Please contact Marc if you have any questions about what to bring.  This year hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks will be served at noon hour at the public access.

June 28th, 2003 - Cut up and disposal of logs
From 10 am to approximately noon at the public access.  This will be followed by a luncheon BBQ at the Adcock's for all who assist.  Chainsaws, muscles and trucks are required.

July 1st, 2003 - Canada Day
Canada Day falls on a Tuesday this year and as many people will be working the APELL association will not be hosting a fireworks display.  If you plan to be at the lake on July 1st and wish to set off fireworks of your own, you may wish to meet up with your neighbors at the public access at approximately 10 pm.

August 2nd, 2003 - Children's Picnic and Games Day / Adults Dinner and Dance Party
The children's picnic and BBQ will be held at Dave and Gisèle Adcock's cottage commencing with a fishing derby from dawn until noon hour.  Lunch and games will follow with prizes being presented at 2pm.  Please ensure your family members have valid fishing licenses.
The adult BBQ party will once again take place at the Adcock's cottage and will run from 5 pm to midnight.  If you happen to be a musician please bring along your instrument(s).

August 30th, 2003 - General Meeting

Harnessing the Wind

Congratulations to Steve Slaby, a long time local cottager who has achieved a high level of success at two National windsurfing competitions.  Windsurfing has been a sport that Steve has enjoyed for quite some time.

It all started on a nice hot Saturday afternoon at the cottage on Lac Latourelle in the early 1990's with a nice breeze gently rustling the trees and an urge to try a new watersport.  The first afternoon was not very pretty, with more time spent in the water than on the board, but with the success of managing to go for about 50 feet without falling, a decision was made to try and learn the sport.

Within a couple of weeks Steve bought his first of many boards to get serious about learning the sport.  Little did Steve know that his humble beginnings with windsurfing would turn into such a passion for the sport.

Over the years Steve has spent as much time as possible windsurfing with his fiancée, Lucie Lejeune, in various places such at his cottage on Lac Latourelle, as well as spending the occasional afternoon on Blue Sea Lake, the Baskatong Reservoir (big waves!), Lac Dumont as well as lots of time on the Ottawa river.  His passion for windsurfing has also taken him long distances such as New Brunswick, North Carolina, Florida as well as Margarita island in Venezuela.

Two years ago, as his love for the sport grew, Steve started entering competitions mainly for the fun but also to improve his skills.  As a result of the learning experience of entering competitions and spending as much time on the water as possible (95 windsurfing sessions last year, the last one on December 18th with snow on the ground) Steve managed to succeed in his goals in national competitions.

His results for 2002 are as follows:

1st place in the Amateur Formula division of the Canadian Windsurfing Championships that was held in Kingston Ontario this past July

3rd place in his age group at the Canadian Masters Windsurfing Association Championships that was held in Shippagan, New Brunswick this past August.

Many thanks to Raymond Lacroix who rented Steve a basic windsurfer on a nice sunny summer afternoon to try on Lac Latourelle many years ago which started this long but thoroughly enjoyable journey and to Lucie who supports him in this endeavour, even when he goes Windsurfing in December in the middle of a snowstorm! ?

Council Initiatives and the Cottager

Regrettably, we have not heard any word from council with regards to the annual meeting with the cottage association presidents.  Last year no meeting at all took place.  It is a pity so little priority is placed upon good relations between council and the various cottage associations.

SNOWSTORM WARNING; SLIPPERY ROAD CONDITIONS

It is now November and as I'm looking at the snow and slush outside, I'm trying to put together an article on the events of last summer.  What do I remember most?  Heat, heat, and more heat!  It's hard to believe right now that we went through one of the hottest and driest summers on record.  Too warm to sit outside, too warm to sleep!  Nevertheless, it was another busy year at the lake.

CLEAN-UP DAYS ON LAC LATOURELLE

The first clean-up week-end was held with two main areas of activities: the public access and Tremblay bay.  It was very warm but everyone worked well into the afternoon.  With a low lake level and an excellent turnout, more than the usual number of large floaters, brush and limbs were collected at both sites.

At the request of the municipality, your president organized another clean-up to remove the large amount of debris from the public access.  With chain saws in hand and at least 8 vehicles, logs were cut, loaded and removed by a dedicated, hardworking crew.  WAY TO GO!

On behalf of the association, thank you one and all for your participation and for the incredible amount of work done both week-ends.  Thank you again everyone very, very much!

ADULT AND CHILDREN'S PICNICS

Another great day, another warm one.  No hint of rain.  Put the dining tents away!  Lake water was warm out of the tap.  Some folks even installed air conditioners in their cottage, lucky ducks!  They slept well while others endured heroically.  As planned, both picnics were held at Dave and Gisèle Adcock's cottage.

CHILDREN'S CATCH

With the heat, the fish were elusive, but a brave bunch of children did their very best.  Here are the results:

Other participants were: Martin Tremblay, Sky Karalekas, Marc Antoine Taylor, Philip and Marc Tremblay, Paulina Trauttmansdorff, and André and Marc Levis.  Congratulations everyone!

Children and adults enjoyed several games in the afternoon organized by Lucie Tremblay and Josée St. Cyr.  Thank you very much ladies for the balloons filled with water and the wet sponge competitions.  It was nice to see so many involved and know the prizes were appreciated.  The barbecue was delicious of course, with an array of desserts to choose from.

A huge thank you to the following people who donated money and prizes towards the picnics:  Debbie Tobalt, John Devlin, Jackie and Laurent Tremblay, Fran and Jim Barresi, Pierre Gravel, Gilles Morneau, Dave and Gisèle Adcock, Lisette and Lucie Tremblay, Adele Moore, Patrick Whelan, Josée Tremblay, Ferdinand and Chris Trauttmansdorff, Rita and Gaston Tremblay, and Frank and Gay Capello, plus anyone else I may have missed.

Also, a very special thank you to the following businesses for their generous contribution of gifts toward both events:

ADULT SOIREE

In the evening, beautiful and balmy, the adult's picnic was magnificently attended by quite the crowd.  The barbecues were cooking and searing in splendour!  With hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken kebabs, a wonderful roast of pork, homemade pork and beans, plus delicious desserts, we all sat and dined in bliss.  It was quite a feast and rewarding to see so many new and old friends enjoying themselves!  Many thanks to all the great cooks and revellers, and a special thank you again to our hosts Dave and Gisèle Adcock for all their hospitality.

Council At A Glance

By: Morris Richardson

The association has requested I be their continuing eyes and ears on council matters and as such I have been attending a number of regular meetings of council.

One such meeting in October discussed the water level issue on our lake.  As many of you are aware, the seriously low water level has endangered many water lines, and several cottagers have already reported frozen and burst pipes due to their lines sitting on bare beaches.  We had previously warned municipal authorities of the potential problem some months ago.

However, once the water is gone, you cannot put it back into the lake.  You must wait for new rainfall to enable the level of the water to rise.  The unusually low rainfall of the late summer and early fall has aggravated the situation.  Vandalism at the culvert (removing the last remaining water barrier) has also contributed largely to the issue.

Council decided to direct the municipal works director to put in a permanent metal barrier, in the form of a used grader blade, as a bottom water retainer, in order to minimize the capacity of persons to easily remove these barriers.

This has since been carried out.  Now that the fall has arrived, and a greater quantity of rainfall seems to be the norm, the water level of the lake is slowly rising.  The metal barrier is retaining the water, while still permitting some water to proceed through the culvert to the lower creek areas.  Municipal authorities have promised to monitor the situation more closely and if vandalism continues, it may be necessary to weld the plate permanently in position.  Time will tell.

Annual Lake Clean Up

By Fran Barresi

June 29th 2002 (annual lake clean up at public access boat launch) was a very important day on our lake as we removed a considerable number of dangerous deadheads which are hazardous to all who enjoy water activities such as swimming, skiing, paddle boats or just canoeing etc.  We know the importance of not removing those logs that are not floating because this would be an environmental issue, so therefore only the floating ones are removed.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank those people who take it upon themselves to work very hard each year so we can have a safe and glorious summer.

Special thanks to the following:

Marc Girard for organizing the lake clean up.  There were plenty of people out in boats but not enough chainsaws to cut and remove the deadheads brought in by the boats.

Working the chainsaws:  Pete Gravelle, Mark Girard and son Matt

4x4's:  Marc and Matt Girard, Guy Desbiens, Jean Robert and Vivian Cyr

Boats:  Dave and Gisèle Adcock, Jim Barresi, Frank Capello, John Devlin, Gilles Morneau, Morris Richardson, Josie St. Cyr, Jean Guy Touchette, Bob Trink, Laurent and Jackie Tremblay

Pick up, carry and move those trunks and chunks:  Dave Adcock when he finished hauling by boat, Marc and Matt Girard when Marc wasn't using the chain saw or tying up to yet another giant and his son Matt when he wasn't cutting or on his 4x4.  Brian Hickey, Guy Desbiens when he wasn't pulling in another deadhead with his 4x4 wheeler.

Next year we will need more people to cut and stack so bring your chainsaws and we won't have people doing double the work.  This debris according to the municipality should be cleaned up within three weeks of lake clean up, this means no logs left at public access.  If we had more chainsaws working and people stacking wood piles could be easily picked up and taken usually to Morris for burning or for your own camp fire roasting marshmallow night.

We would also like to thank Dave and Gisèle Adcock for the day we had to go back and clean up the debris and for throwing a good food party our way at their cottage.

Last but not least our Mascots Boomer and Rebal.  Check out the web site and see the pics of Rebal the rottweiler, the brute with the chainsaw attached to his collar, and no hands to pull the cord but contemplating picking up the log with his powerful jaws.

See Boomer checking me out to make sure I get an action photo of Rebal.  Sorry Boomer a humungus tree has just arrived-Gotta go get that photo, just let me know if Rebal succeeds.  Two short barks a growl and I'll be back.

Photo's and pic's on the web site and this letter of thanks from us to you.  Compliments of yours truly,

  Fran Barresi.

First summer, First impressions

By: Chris Trauttmansdorff

One sunny Saturday last March, we crossed our fingers and took a leap of faith.  We had begun the search for a summer cottage early in the New Year, resolving to get a good feel for the market and familiarize ourselves with the region over the winter so we'd be in a position to make a decision and a purchase once the snow had cleared.  There was no way we were going to put in an offer on anything before the ice melted and our fellow cottagers had emerged from hibernation!  The two factors that mattered most to us were the lake itself and the community we'd live in, and neither was easy to assess in the depths of winter.

Famous last words!  We'd seen only a half dozen places before we came across the little log cabin on Lac Long.  The day itself was magical... bright and crisp, with a light dusting of fresh snow making everything sparkle.  The sun was shining and offered a tantalizing hint of what summer might bring.  The cabin itself was picture perfect - a snug and inviting little retreat, rustic yet cosy, a real haven.  Not to mention that it had everything we wanted in a cottage... easy access but lots of privacy, a price tag within our budget, and all the comforts required to make our time there a real vacation.

We were definitely smitten, but still sensible enough to drive away and head for the next place the real estate agent had put on our list.  By the end of the day however, we hadn't seen anything that came close to that charming little log house, and we decided to go back to Lac Long for a second look.

Again, a little magic.  We explored the roads around the lake, to see what we could see, and were spotted by some people who live there year-round.  We waved and smiled and explained why we were wandering around in the middle of winter.  Their response was the best sales pitch imaginable.  They not only provided lots of reassuring information about the lake, the water quality, and the area, but described a community that sounded just as friendly and nice as they were.  Within a week we were proud owners of a little piece of heaven.

Our first summer on Lac Long has confirmed all our first impressions and convinced us that sometimes, taking a leap of faith is a very sensible thing to do.  We spent more than six happy weeks and many weekends at the cottage this summer, relaxing, swimming, paddling, entertaining family and friends, and spending time with each other -- time that is so scarce the rest of the year.

We met many, many more neighbours who offered a warm welcome and were quick to make us feel part of the neighbourhood.  An e-mail to APELL's website the week after our purchase resulted in an enthusiastic phone call from Victoria, and the association's dynamic duo, David and Gisèle, arrived on our doorstep the first weekend we were there to say hello.  Who could ask for a better reception?

Now that winter is almost upon us, we're looking forward to seeing what the lake has to offer on those weekends when we can escape the hustle bustle of life in the city.  We're also wondering how a Christmas tree might look in the corner by the window and how big a turkey our BBQ can accommodate!

And of course, we're talking regularly about plans for next summer... a bridge for the new dock, a hike up the mountain, paddling on some of the other lakes in the area.  Maybe a hammock for the veranda.  So much to look forward to -- we can hardly wait.

Septic Tank Cleaning

By: Morris Richardson

With the lagoons having been declared illegal by the Quebec ministry last year, it has been necessary to find an alternate location for the area municipalities to dump their raw sewage.  After much research, a site was found in Kazabazua, the land was purchased, and the necessary permits were obtained from the various responsible ministries.  There were delays when some of the local population yelled "not in our backyard", but this has also since been resolved.  Work has now begun on the actual site and it should be ready to accept sewage early next summer.

Blue Sea, along with other municipalities, have had to temporarily suspend their programs until the new site is operational.  This past year, there was no clean-outs in the municipality.  This should not affect cottagers, since we should have all gone through the initial emptying two years ago, and we are not due for another round for another two years.  However, if any resident was scheduled to have their site emptied, arrangements can be made with the municipality as to reimbursement of the costs to have it done privately.

Your taxes will still reflect the program costs, since cottagers had their costs amortized over a term which may still be running, though the service to others is temporarily dormant.

Fran's Helpful Tips

Use fresh cloves instead of mothballs to keep mice out of your cottage or camper; it really works and has such a nice odour.
---------------------------------

After cleansing food coolers with soap and water, using a clean cloth sprinkle vanilla extract inside and spread around the bottom and sides.  Leave that same cloth inside and close or lock it up for the winter; the next time you need to use it for transporting your food you'll find it smells fresh and clean.
